By far one of the best TV shows out there (and not just for the sake of one badass, yet reluctant, little prophet). This highly intelligent, action-heavy post-apocalyptic drama ran from 2002 to 2004 on Sci-fi Channel (US) and Space (Canada). Sadly, due to differences of opinion between the creator and the studio, it was cancelled way too early just when it was steering head-on towards a conclusion of five-different-levels-of-epic proportions. We're focussing mostly on Season 2 here because, well, you know…Smith...whose first name is actually Mister, apparently (which clearly beats Fox Mulder as one of the strangest TV show character names I know). But yeah, anything Jeremiah-related goes in here. By the way, just found what TV Tropes had to say about the show. Many interesting pointers!

Argghh!! Don't get me started on Mister Smith! Too late, you got me started! First, a little bit about it's creator, J. Michael Straczynski: He is the creative genius behind " Babylon 5." a 5-season scifi series that aired in the 90s, still one of the best scifi shows ever. The man knows how to weave a long term plot arc, create fascinating flawed but likable characters who change and grow (or devolve) over time, and is not afraid to challenge expectations. (By the way, JMS is a big devotee of Tolkien, and there are MANY LOTR references in Babylon 5!) It was on the strength of his involvement with "Jeremiah" as much as the presence of Sean Astin that got me to watch the show. If you have not seen it, you MUST! It's Sean's best role since LOTR, and ranks right up there with Samwise. You can buy it on iTunes, buy DVDs on Amazon or watch streaming on Amazon Prime. Mister Smith is a mysterious, tormented, gentle man who's been forced to see, know and do unspeakable things. Sean's portrayal of him will make you weep and haunt your dreams. The best online resource for "Jeremiah" is Peter Galey's Thunder Mountain Files, with plot synopses, quotes, credits, notes, descriptions of the characters, background information, etc. It's a shame the series got cancelled when it did. But did you know there was a graphic novel written based on Jeremiah? The script was completed and a few pages were drawn, but various circumstances led to the project being abandoned by MGM despite a heroic effort by fans to resurrect it. More on that later!

Very well said, mistersmith! So happy that the link to those completed comic book pages is still here: seanastinfan.blogspot.de/search/label/Luke%20Perry. This has to be, without exaggeration, one of the best-drawn graphic novels I've ever seen! The character likeness is incredible! Here for example: Wonder what those heroic fan efforts were. You got me curious.

As best as I remember and can reconstruct the story, in 2004, Platinum Studios, which produced Jeremiah, commissioned a script for a graphic novel based on the TV show. A script written by Andrew Foley was approved by Platinum, MGM, Showtime and the major stars. An artist was hired and likenesses of the stars were also approved by the stars, including Sean. But alas, the artist only produced about 30 pages of drawings. Interest waned in the show, and the project languished. In 2006, the project came to light among some fans, and a big push was made to resurrect it with emails, phone calls and letter writing. Execs at Platinum became involved and tried to assist. But MGM had little interest in spending more money, especially as the Season 1 DVD of Jeremiah wasn't selling that well. (And wasn't it also a struggle to convince them to release Season 2!!) But Platinum did agree to publish the existing pages on the book online, and the full script is out there. In fact, a link to a zipped file of Word documents may be here.

Just started reading through the script. Wow - the amount of fan fiction this could inspire...

Oh dear...new favorite moment in the show: Just rewatched Crossing Jordan and now moved on to Running on Empty (Season 2, Episode 9). When Smith gives Erin her message, about five minutes before the end of the episode...check that out again. Sounds corny, but the whole scene is pure magic. I think THAT is the chemistry we've been looking for! Speaking of fanfiction...it just wrote itself in my mind. First story. This'll be good.

Sean is brilliant in that scene, how his expression changes as he talks to Erin, and again as he's walking away. Simply brilliant!
Ooh Smithfic! *excited*
I haven't rewatched Jeremiah in a few years. I think it's time. :-)
