I think this could be a lot of fun. The question here is: If you could re-cast any movie and any role with Sean, which ones would it be and why? We are talking about past, current, and announced film projects - or even TV shows! Pretty much anything goes! Supporting material such as pictures, video, etc. to help prove your point would be awesome but are by no means necessary! Now, let's get started: One of my first picks would be Bastian from The Neverending Story (1984). I grew up both reading the book and watching the movie and that character has always been kind of iconic to me. While Bastian in the books is a much more complex character, I always thought Barrett Oliver did a great job playing him in the movie. On the other hand, we should note that The Goonies only came out one year after The Neverending Story. And while Barrett Oliver is actually two years older than Sean, it's easy to see how both young actors could have played the part equally well. And something tells me that if Mikey didn't have the support from family and friends and was really into books, he might as well be Bastian. Now for a little side-by-side comparison (creepy attic and nearly identical ominous soundtrack included in both scenes): Pretty sure I can make a case for this. Your turn, guys!

Oh yes, Sean would have made a great Bastian! I didn't realize the movies came out so close together.
I would have loved to see Sean play Mo in "Inkheart" (2008). I saw him in my head as I was reading the books. Quite frankly, I hated Brandon Fraser in the movie, and thought he was horribly miscast. Mo is a gentle man, a lover of books, dedicated to his family. He wants a quiet life, but can be brave when called upon to do so. Sean would have been perfect.

I may be the only one, but ever since I heard Sean doing lines from Cyrano in Bigger Than the Sky, I've wanted to see him in some classical theater venue. He could carry off Puck in Midsummer Night's Dream, or Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. Heck, I'd love to see him do Cyrano for real!

Rach, you're definitely not the only one! Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream sounds like the perfect part for him. Cyrano? Definitely. Mercutio? Perfect. Though I have to confess for some reasons I LOVE seeing him break out of the Mr. Nice Guy mold. It's a weird fascination. Not quite sure where it comes from but whenever he actually gets to play a villain or even just someone who is kind of a jerk, I'm completely awestruck. Getting back to the nice guys, though (but staying on the stage) mistersmith mentioned that he'd been trying to work on a musical, though we don't know which. I think he would make a fantastic Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors!

Seymour would be good. You have to ignore me. i'm just a Shakespeare, etc, buff. Puck isn't that good a guy and neither is Mercutio, really. Mercutio has some AWESOME speeches! I just think ANYTHING in that line would be a departure and great fun!
Here's a "bad buy" for you. What about the guy in Great Expectations, the friend of Pip that "shamed" the girl. Can't think of his name this minute but Sean could carry that off, too.
Sean did so well with the Cyrano speech from BTTS that, yes, I think that would work for him. Hope he'd get to play it without the nose....

OMG Sean as Mercutio would be FANTASTIC!!! *swoons at thought*
Another role: the reporter (don't recall the name) in a remake of Inherit the Wind.

Damn, I have some SERIOUS catching up to do. Mainly on my Shakespeare. And Inkheart! Sad to say, I get most of my literature through movies these days, but some of those adaptation are really great. Speaking of a more modern adaptation, how about Chuck Aule from Shutter Island (he was played by Marc Ruffalo in the movie)?

Oh! I forgot the one role I've been wishing Sean could do for YEARS! Another good guy, sorry, but wouldn't he be great as Atticus Finch in a remake of To Kill a Mockingbird? I can see him as clear as day standing in his shirt sleeves in the hot court room, gathering his things and walking out under the gallery as everyone up there stands and the older man tells Scout, "Stand up. Your daddy's walkin' by." Well, words to that effect. He'd be better than Gregory Peck.

Might sound a bit lame to say, but I was thinking about that same possibility yesterday. He might just be one of the last actors alive today who would make a convincing Atticus Finch. I'm not too sure if they would remake To Kill a Mockingbird, but if they did, Sean would be the guy! Remember, we don't have to go entirely with movies that match Sean's age. I do wonder sometimes what his career would have been like if he hadn't been just a little too young to be part of the Brat Pack generation. Back in the mid 80's, teen actors were a lot more hip than they were just a few years later in the early 90's. I could see 17-20 year old Sean in a number of John Hughes movies. He could have tried out for any of the male parts in The Breakfast Club, for example (rebel, nerd, jock - he could have pulled off any of those). But most significantly, two words come to mind *drumroll, please*: Ferris. Bueller. Think about it: Insanely cute smartass kid, devious, no respect for authority, charming, way with words, can wrap his parents around his little finger, wings it in pretty much any situation, can run across ten suburban backyards in two minutes or less. Yep, sounds like Sean.

Oh, gosh! I hadn't thought of Ferris but you're right. He could have pulled that off.
Here's one that's out there. What about Sean as an incarnation of the Dr in Doctor Who? He's not British, of course, but we're speculating anyway. He could do a simple British accent, and the Dr isn't really British anyway. (Not that I think they would ever hire a non-British actor) He could be both wacky and deadly serious, with a touch of creep factor, all good for the famous Gallifreyan.

Your daddy's walkin' by." Oh gosh that gives me chills. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books and movies ever, and in a way, both are sacrosanct to me. But if anyone else could pull off the quiet, determined, noble, gentle, slightly dorky (remember the scene where his glasses are in the way as he takes aim at the rabid dog?) everyman-of-integrity Atticus Finch, it would be Sean. You know there is a play adaptation; it would be AMAZING to see him in that! Young, charming, smart ass, rebellious Sean or the late 80s, early 90s could have played any number of roles in teen movies! And now for something completely different: I'd love to see him in Glee! He'd make a great teacher or parent, and is perfect at blending the oddball comedy with the genuine touching moments in the show.

That's scene from TKAM is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time! I get chills imagining Sean in it, too. So few actors today could carry that off!
I watched the first couple of seasons of Glee. Loved the music but the story got to be SUCH a snoozefest that I let it slide. I'd watch if Sean was in it.
I hate that Alphas was cancelled before he completely finished it, but that's off topic.
Here's another one that out there, if you want to see Sean doing a bad boy role. What about Raymond Burr's role from the movie Rear Window, Lars Thorwald? There's very little dialogue so the acting would have to be mostly physical. Good challenge for Sean.

Agree on Glee. Not a fan, but I'd watch it for Sean (that goes for pretty much everything, though). Can't quite see the Dr. Who thing, but Lars Thorwald from Rear Window would be very interesting indeed. Now, for a possible main role: Dominick Cobb from Inception (DiCaprio's character). I think Sean has what it takes here to portray the different layers of this character: Genius, businessman, teacher, grieving husband - add the internal struggles and action hero moments and things are looking pretty good.
