It's always interesting to read about alternate casting choices. I've always been curious about roles that Sean was considered for at one point in time but turned down or didn't get (for whatever reason), but I never found much info. I believe I heard somewhere that he was considered for River Phoenix' part in Explorers (1985)? Does anyone know more about this or other roles that Sean could have gotten in the past? Let's discuss, people!

Sean turned down the role in "Explorers" to do "The Goonies," a wise choice, I think! He was beat out by River Phoenix for "Stand by Me." Sean also lost out to Chris O'Donnell in "The Scent of a Woman," but beat Chris for "Rudy." The producers of Rudy wanted Chris, but director David Anspaugh and Rudy Ruettiger pushed for Sean. Sean has said that he tried out for hundreds of voice roles before he started getting them. He credits what he learned from voice coaching for Lord of the Rings for helping in that area. He and Wil Wheaton both tried out early this year for roles in some version of The Transformers; never heard anything about that. Photo posted by Sean on Twitter! Last year he tried out for a musical (!!) and for a role in "42," the biopic of Jackie Robinson that came out last spring. He talked about some of the older roles, I think it was during the Q&A at Fandom Fest, June 2012. Video part 1/3 here.

Wow! I had no idea. It's interesting how they had Sean and Chris O' Donnell going head-to-head on some of the same roles. I think I can see how Hollywood saw some similarities between them back then. Sean in "The Scent of a Woman" would have been amazing! Can't believe they weren't beating down his door with the voice roles, though. Wonder why he had to try for so long. Wonder why they've always made him try so much harder than everyone else. Or does it just seem that way to us? I know they were trying to (unsuccessfully) typecast the hell out of him after LOTR. But before? Oh my god, a musical?! Really?! I would love to know what that was. Hearing him sing was basically the reason I dragged myself to watching that Hallmark version of "Hercules". Needless to say, that needs to happen more often. He has a great singing voice. Wonder how that would sound projected across a stage into an entire theater. Maybe the next time he is up for a new personal project besides running 3rd and Vox Populi, he can join a band? Don't know about anyone else but it would certainly make me happy. "42", huh? Interesting number. Looks like an interesting movie. Figures he would be drawn to it.

Sean Astin in "Rudy" and Chris O'Donnell in "Scent of a Woman": Uncanny!

Not gonna lie - this just blew my mind. Do you think this might warrant a tumblr post?

Blew my mind too! I hadn't seen Scent of a Woman in many years, so wanted to see a picture of what Chris looked like. This is the first one I came across. I thought, wow that looks like another picture I know of!
Good idea! I'll do a tumblr post tomorrow. I'm in bed now working, er playing on my iPad, and it's too much of a hassle to do from here!

No sweat. Looking forward to that post! This is too cool not to share. I think the suit that Sean wore during some parts of Rudy (and in my profile pic) probably even matches Chris' to a T.
